For a first-time attempt at an underwater camcorder, the SDR-SW20 is a fairly solid performer. If you already own a camcorder, it will suit perfectly well as a secondary unit for oceanic holidays.

Waterproof/shock-proof/dust-proof design, underwater footage is surprisingly clear, cheap asking price

No hand strap hampers on-land shooting, screen is too reflective, swapping SD cards can be difficult in wet conditions

Panasonic SDR-SW20

When moisture mysteriously entered this unit and shut it down, Panasonic service wanted 80 bucks to tell me it was unfixable and "corroded". I put it in the cuboard for a few months then plugged it in again. It turned on then had broken images for...

It worked for 1 month

It didn't work for the next 5 months

I can only reiterate the negative experiences above with this camera. The only difference is that I have not gone through the repair process which sounds like it will only end with a bad ending. DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA. If you want a real waterproof...

When it works it's fine

Leaked water after few months - at snorkel depth

Panasonic SDR-SW20

I have had this camera for a few months now and I absolutely love it. Small compact take anywhere, easy to use. Highly recommend it.

Compact ; Dust proof, water tight and has survived several drops already

Picture quality (good but not brilliant) ; Battery life (If on holiday and are out for the whole day it's quite possible you will kill the battery so I now always carry a spare battery and SD card but as these are pretty small this is not a hassle,...

Panasonic SDR-SW20

Case started leaking after 3rd day of snorkelling - not covered by warranty, not fit for purpose in my opinion

Portable, easy to use

Advertised for underwater use but not warranted for underwater use. 3 days use for $599 is not good value

Great little camera. Small rugged, easy to use. The wrist strap doubles as an effective hand strap.

Waterproof, shockproof, small, rugged

Not a huge battery life, carry one spare at least

Panasonic SDR-SW20

I have had this camcorder for about 2 months now and I find it a treat. I love the fact its water proof as I have a dog and love going in the water with him. Im not afraid of getting it wet nor worried about the sand or dirt. The IS (image stabiliser)...

Great all rounder, Image stabiliser -excellent. robust and compact.

Picture is not the best, but if you are just after the memories of your trip then its ok. Battery life is not long (always keep a spare)

Just to be clear Panasonic have been very very fair and offered us a new camera at a discounted price. On Christmas day we were using our camera in the pool. Both my husband and I checked all of the latches to make sure they were closed, however after...
