Sony A5100 sounds surprisingly good

With the Alpha A5100 (aka ILCE-5100), Sony replaces the NEX-5T and sticks a fork in the NEX line, unifying all its mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras (ILC) under the ILCE model-naming convention. Coming in at $550/£420 for the body or...

Right now, while there are a lot of competitors at and around the A5100's price, Sony's option seems to offer quite a bit for the money.

Sony α5100

An update to the popular α5000 that provides higher resolution, a touch-screen monitor, improved movie recording and a fast hybrid AF system with 179 detection points.

The lack of a viewfinder will always be an issue for photographers who live in the Southern Hemisphere where clear skies and bright sunlight can make LCD screens unreadable. Aside from that, the α5100 is a good performer at a reasonable price.

The image quality is good, and better than good in RAW mode. Auto white balance is particularly fine even under mixed light sources where subjects are rendered in correct colours. Movie mode is aided by a very smooth power zoom function controlled with...

The absence of any external function controls – even something as elementary as shooting mode (Auto, P, S, A, M) is a pain in the posterior. There is no eye-level viewfinder, not even an option ; VERDICT: The Sony a5100 is clearly made for someone...

The Sony a5100 is clearly made for someone trading up from a point and shoot compact who wants better image quality without taxing the brain. The camera is capable of producing outstanding images, but left to its own devices you won’t get 100 per cent...
