Toshiba DV615 Series LCD TV ( 19", 22", 26" )

Toshiba 19DV615Y

By Campbell Simpson

The Toshiba 19DV615Y is a 19in LCD television with an integrated DVD player. It has good picture quality for its size and the multimedia features are easy to use. If it was cheaper, we€™d have no problems recommending it over competitors.

Integrated DVD player, DVD player loads discs quickly, high resolution for a 19in screen, good picture quality

Slightly chunky, power plug interferes with wall mounting

Picture quality from the Toshiba 19DV615Y isn€™t fantastic, but it€™s acceptable given the small screen size. A contrast ratio of 1000:1 is high enough to make both television and DVD watching reasonably rich and vibrant, but Blu-ray content delivered ...

Sony Bravia KDL-W5500 Series LCD TV ( 32" ,37" ,40" ,46" ,52" )

The Sony Bravia KDL32W5500 is a Full HD 32in LCD television with multimedia features, good picture quality and a modern design. It€™s one of the best mid-size LCD screens we€™ve tested, but its price is double that of some other 32in TVs we€™ve seen.

Good contrast and motion control, modern design, good scaling

Expensive for a 32in panel

If you€™re looking for a mid-size LCD television, Sony€™s Bravia KDL32W5500 is king of the bunch. It comes with a higher price tag than we would have liked, but if you want the pedigree you€™ll have to pay for it.

Sony Bravia KDL-Z5500 Series LCD TV ( 40", 46", 52" )

The Sony Bravia KDL52Z5500 is a 52in LCD television with a 200Hz refresh rate. It€™s the successor to the Bravia KDL52Z4500, with a new video processor and improved multimedia playback. The TV gives you a lot of control over motion control and picture ...

Good motion smoothing, minimal design

No LED technology, expensive

We'd go so far as to say that the Sony Bravia KDL52Z5500 is the current pinnacle of (non-LED) LCD television technology. Good, natural-looking motion smoothing and a vibrant colour palette make for a television that's very enjoyable to watch.

Sony XEL-1

Sony XEL-1 OLED TV

By Campbell Simpson

The Sony XEL-1 is an OLED television with an 11in screen and a price-tag of $7000. While this combination guarantees it will only make it onto the sprawling mahogany desks of ultra-rich executives, there's little doubt that it has the best picture ...

The best picture quality we've seen - absolute blacks, good colour saturation and control

Unattainably expensive, reflective screen, non-HD resolution

We could never recommend that anyone purchase this television given its tiny size and incredible price. But as a glimpse into the promising future of OLED televisions, the Sony XEL-1 is technically brilliant.

Samsung Luxia B8000 Series LED TV ( 40", 46", 55" )

Samsung's 46in Series 8 (UA46B8000) LED TV is the most 'complete' television we've seen so far: it offers Internet and network connectivity, multimedia playback features and LED backlighting.

Great Media@2.0 features, vibrant picture, ultra-modern styling, adjustable 200Hz mode

Backlight clouding under specific conditions, can't easily use analog connectors when wall-mounted

Apart from some problems with the LED backlighting under very specific test conditions, the Samsung UA46B8000 LED television has exceptionally good picture quality: 200Hz motion smoothing and a high dynamic contrast ratio combine to make even standard ...

TEAC LCD228HDM TV

Teac LCD228HDM LCD TV

By Campbell Simpson

The Teac LCD228HDM is a 22in LCD television with a multi-card reader and USB 2.0 port that let you display photos and play videos and music. A range of inputs allows external devices like an HDD recorder or desktop PC to be connected.

Decent picture quality, integrated card reader and USB port

Multimedia menu is ugly, low contrast, occasional scaling issues

As a television for a bedroom or study the Teac LCD228HDM LCD TV serves well, with multiple video inputs and options for playing back video, audio and pictures off a USB stick or memory card. It doesn't have any image enhancing features, but for ...

Sony Bravia KDL40E4500

Sony Bravia KDL40E4500

By Campbell Simpson

Not outrageously expensive, network connectivity, Sony's network streaming and XMB interface

Some motion control problems, image quality issues

If you're looking for a Sony television that offers decent picture quality and a great-looking frame, the KDL40E4500 is a good option. It may not be as brilliant as its Samsung counterparts but we prefer the design and user interface.

Sony Bravia KDL-WE5 Series LCD HDTV (40",46")

Sony Bravia KDL46WE5

By Campbell Simpson

Impressively low power consumption figures, DLNA support, decent picture quality

Dorky two-tone chassis, expensive, some eco features compromise picture quality

The Sony Bravia KDL46WE5 shows that cathode-backlit LCDs can be green-friendly without destroying image quality. The picture quality isn't as good as an LED-backlit TV, but the overall package is decent.

LG 42LH50YD

LG 42LH50YD

By Campbell Simpson

200Hz mode, motion smoothing options, good colour control and vibrancy

Not the deepest blacks, 200Hz mode is artificially smooth

If you're looking for a non-LED backlit LCD television that's still chock-full of technology, LG's 42LH50YD fits the bill nicely with 200Hz motion control and great picture quality.

Panasonic TH-50VX100W

By Campbell Simpson

Exceptional picture quality, lots of settings to tweak

Requires expert calibration for best picture, expensive, no speakers

If you're looking for a plasma television that's even more amazing than Pioneer's KURO series, Panasonic's Premiere Series TVs should be your port of call.
